Being found when nobody searches any more

More and more people ask an assistant instead of a search engine. The answer names two or three companies. Whether you are one of them is decided on your own site.

What changed

A search engine returns ten blue links and leaves the choice to you. An assistant returns a paragraph and perhaps three names. Anyone not in it does not exist for that user, and there is no second page of results.

What an assistant needs

Text it can read without executing anything. Clear headings, real sentences rather than clouds of keywords, and facts that can be checked: location, price, service, contact. Pages whose content is assembled in the browser are empty as far as many of these systems are concerned.

Structured data

A machine-readable block in the source saying what your company is, where it sits, what it offers and what that costs. Search engines have used it for years for display; assistants use it to understand. Half an hour once, and it works for years.

Why speed counts here too

Systems that read pages give up when an answer takes too long. A slow page is captured in full less often, and what is not captured is not quoted.

What you can check yourself

Ask an assistant for a provider of what you do, in your region. Who gets named? Look at those pages. In most cases they simply say more plainly what they are about.
